Table Top | Still Life Statement

In Tabletops I explore the still-life composition of daily objects, together with the tension between positive/negative space.

Objects depicted in these works are beloved items from my own table and daily life. The objects are all presented on a white table top, and in a simple, crude and unrefined manner. My emphasis here is more directed toward the overall compositions, and not as much on light and shadow which normally takes a greater importance in still-life.

I have over the years been interested in the single object presented on a table top, as in my earlier groups of works titled “Glass”, “Hard Candy”, “Eggs” etc. In these works, as in Spanish Bowl presented here, I allow a simple daily object to take on a whole new focus and meaning while presented in a larger-than-life composition.

Still-lifes have been known since the time of the Egyptians Fayum portraits, the wonderful ancient Roman mosaics, and the Impressionists. They are a constant inspiration to modern and contemporary artists, and to me.
